Description

Getting started on imaging of Venus during the 2021 evening apparition.  This is going to be a tough one with Venus having a maximum altitude of around 20 degrees at my latitude this apparition.  A bit of a rough start between getting up and running my Venus imaging workflow and some lousy daytime seeing...

These images were captured on the night of November 1, 2021. Venus was  25.9 arcsec in diameter and ~47.8% illuminated in this image. Taken during daylight while Venus was higher (still so low this apparition!), but seeing was below average.

Imaged with a C8 Evo, ZWO ADC, Baader UV-IR Cut and IR685 nm pass filters, and ZWO ASI224MC. Imaging train was configured to give ~F/20. Image capture using Firecapture (see below for exposure settings). Stacking in AutoStakkert3 (best 10% of ~10000 frames captured over 180 seconds). Color balancing and Wavelet sharpening in Registax6. Derotated and combined three images in WinJUPOS.

Exposure settings for UV-IR Cut Filter images: Shutter=1ms, Gain=200, Histogram=76%, 100 FPS
Exposure settings for IR 685nm Pass Filter images: Shutter=1.1ms, Gain=250, Histogram=47%, 100 FPS

Description: First try at mono imaging of Venus this season. Used an ASI 290MM with UV and IR685 pass filters with the imaging train configured at F/20. This focal length has proven too long for the 290MM in my use previously and these results confirm it yet again. Switching to an ASI 274MM for my Venus mono imaging going forward as that cameras larger pixel sizes are better matched to my SCT at F/20 (a bit undersampled which given my typically not great seeing is a better place to be from my experience).
